Q. When Should I Hire My Wedding Photographer?

A. Hire your photographer as soon as you know your venue, wedding date, and approximate wedding budget. This should be 12 to 18 months in advance.

Q.  How Much Will It Cost?

A. Expect to pay anywhere from $2,000 to $15,000 for your wedding photographer. Where you fall in that range of prices will depend on whether you are hiring the photographer for six hours or a whole wedding weekend. It will also depend on the photographer’s hourly rate, and the number of photographs and/or albums that you request.

Q. How Much Time Will Photo Shoots Take?

A. According to award-winning wedding photographer Calin Ardeleanu, you should plan to allow the photographer to spend two hours on the bridal preparation photos (after the bride’s hair and makeup are done), one hour on the groomsmen preparation photos, and two hours with the bridal party, bride, and groom after the ceremony (thirty minutes of which will involve the whole bridal party).

This timeline can help you schedule enough time between events. As Ardeleanu puts it, “To create a great photograph, a photographer needs time; the more time, the better the results”.

Q. How Should I Find My Wedding Photographer?

A. The internet is a great resource, but don’t rely only on online searches. In addition to doing research on the computer, you should visit with two to five photographers in person.  When you are choosing photographers, consider their past work, personality, and professionalism.

Q. How much do I have to communicate with my wedding photographer?

A. Your wedding photographer will tell you what kind of information they need in order to do their job. This might include information about your tastes and preferences, your timeline, or specific information about the venue. For instance, some churches don’t allow flash photography, and when your photographer knows this in advance they can plan accordingly.

As a general rule, be attentive to what your photographer requests from you, and try to meet those requests in a timely manner. If you are working with a wedding planner you can connect the planner to the photographer so that the planner can handle some of these details for you.
